Hi! My name is Doug MacLean, and along with Ethan Brown, I’m a co-founder of MB Endurance Sport. After spending 4 years as a Division Officer in the US Navy, I became interested in triathlon in the summer of 2006, when one of my friends did an Ironman. Over the last few years, I have fallen in love with the sport. So, after finishing grad school at Michigan, I moved out to Colorado.
My coaching philosophy is that every athlete is unique, and no cookie-cutter approach can be used to train all athletes. Sure, there are some basic workouts and principles that apply to almost everyone, but coaching goes far beyond just writing a generic training plan for someone. A coach needs to know an athlete’s tendencies, strengths & weaknesses, when an athlete needs to be pushed, and when an athlete needs some rest. Familiarity and knowledge at that level can only come when a coach and athlete fully trust each other. I believe that open, honest communication is the foundation of any successful coach-athlete relationship. Hello, my name is Ethan Brown. I have been involved in high-level endurance sports my whole life. I grew up swimming competitively and ran cross country and track for the University of Michigan. I picked up triathlon in the summer of 2005, and just 3 years later I had already won two Elite-U23 national titles. I am currently racing on the ITU World Cup level, competing in triathlons all over the world. It is my goal to be selected for the 2012 Olympics. Coaching is something that I've always known I would get into. My role models growing up were all coaches, and I've been involved in endurance athletics long enough to have developed a good intuitive sense for what it takes to be successful. This, coupled with a scientific, goal-oriented approach is a recipe that I want to share with others. Meeting Doug at the University of Michigan seemed like the perfect opportunity to go into the coaching business with someone who has as much passion for endurance sports as I do. In working with athletes I use an all encompassing approach that involves strength/weight training, general nutritional guidelines, and a long-term training plan. Each of these categories is unique to every athlete. Striking a healthy balance with training and other obligations (work, family, etc.) are also factors that must be considered for meeting one's goals. I feel my knowledge and expertise is best utilized by those training for short-course/70.3 racing, however, I would be open to working with single-sport athletes or Iron-distance athletes. |
